treadmill can't beat this!

We took advantage of a cold but gorgeous day to go out on Sunday and hike a couple of trails. We brought our snowshoes along, just in case, but found the snow conditions on the trails didn't warrant them.

This is part of the Treebeard Trail, so named for the lichen which grows on the trees.

At an observation platform at the summit of the trail; this overlooks a deep ravine with a creek which runs through and down to Waskesiu Lake. These are some of the oldest trees in the park.

This area is quite sheltered and seems to get a lot of snow. That's some weird looking snow on the tree trunk!

The next trail we did was Mud Creek. We have always needed snowshoes for this one in the past. However, once we waded through hip-deep snow to get away from the open area and into the shelter of the trees, it wasn't bad at all.

Some of the drifting near the lakeshore:

It was good to get out in the fresh air and enjoy our park. We've done too little of that this winter. It's been easier to go downstairs and just jump on the treadmill after work, etc. But we're going to make more of an effort to get out and take advantage of our trails so close at hand.

Yesterday I got this in the mail:

Some fabulous Lorna's Laces yarn - the flame red/orange colour and the rainbow colour are LL's Shepherd Sport weight yarn, 100% superwash wool. The blue/turquoise/purple one is LLs "Bullfrogs and Butterflies" a worsted weight mohair/wool blend in the Lakeview colourway - how gorgeous it is! I picked this up at eBay here. I can't wait to use it for a hat or something! This yarn is dangerous - very nice and the colourways are so terrific!

I've been able to put a little bit of time onto Festive - I didn't take a progess shot because it's much the same as the swatch photo below, only a little narrower, and now I'm past the waist decreases and starting to increase again to the full chest measurement. Nice.

Don't forget the new Amazing Race starts tonight!

just think of it as a really big swatch

Even though I did a 6" x 4" swatch, I still miscalculated. Not in the stitch count, oh no, but in the size of the finished garmet. I'm making this cute sweater (how I missed this, I don't know because I love the looks of it!). I'm using some Galway Highland Heather I had in stash. My gauge is between 4.25 and 4.4 spi and the pattern calls for 5 spi. I can tweak as I go, I thought. I was using the size M(36) figures because with my bigger gauge I thought it would make the sweater slightly bigger. It's quite a close-fitting style, so I didn't want it too baggy. So with a 90 stitch cast on for the body/chest and my gauge [4.3 spi], that makes it ... oh, let's see ... yeah, 20.93 x 2 = finished chest size of 41.86. Much too baggy for me in this style of garment. So then I thought I'd use the size S figures which is a cast on of 80 st which would give me a finished chest size of 37.21". Hmm, that might be just a bit too snug. I don't want it gaping at the frogs! So I think I'll add four stitches to the back and a couple to each front to give me the right amount of ease. So 84 divided by 4.3 = 19.53 x 2 = finished chest size of 39.06 which should be very good. My favourite orange cashmere sweater measures 38" for a finished chest size and this is a heavier fabric, so the slightly extra amount of ease will be perfect. Oh, and I'm going to make it in a long-sleeved version.

I was late leaving work this afternoon; even later because I dawdled on the walk home. I saw this the other day but didn't stop to dig my camera out of my backpack. I did today:

Just some fluffy white snow piled up on top of a wooden post along the path.

Isn't that cool how the lichen and moss still survive over the winter?!

So tonight is Survivor night. I'll be ripping out my knitting and starting again with my new plan as I watch. I'm sure all the other network shows are repeats. Yeah, can't waste any of the new episodes on those of us not watching Olympics. Jeez, aren't they over yet?!

oh, sure

Just when I say the elk have been scarce around town lately, I look over my shoulder this afternoon and out my office window:

There's at least 10 elk there - I have cut and pasted to make a collage:

I'm spending the evening fighting with my laptop, Norton Internet Security and its insatiable need to check and download Windows updates - arrrgh! [no, that wasn't a pirate-type arrgh.]

a couple of FOs and a wolf kill!

I finished another rolled-brim hat with some leftover Malabrigo wool. This stuff is so great - so soft, the colours and dye jobs are amazing!

These two are pretty small - infant size, but at least I used up the left-over yarn I had. The next ones will have to be a little bigger. I discovered some Patons Classic Wool in my stash (just single balls of several different colours) which will make nice, warm hats. I had been meaning to try the baby bonnet pattern in Last Minute Knitted Gifts. The Classic Wool is a big big, gaugewise, but I still used it. I made this bonnet in a long evening's knitting.

That big ol' Tiger is so obliging to model for me. The colours are pretty true in this pic (they're washed out by the flash in the pic below). Cute bonnet, but I don't know if I'd make another. It's a really easy pattern, though.

I have a stack of hat patterns I want to try, but for today I decided just to work on my current pair of socks, the Knit Picks my Better Pal sent me. I'll get a photo tomorrow, once I've made a little progress. I've been working on ther 1x1 ribbing on the tops.

Oh, speaking of socks, check these out: Dragon Socks - how cool are they?! I should branch out a bit on my sockmaking and try some new and interesting patterns. Or at least incorporate some interesting stitch patterns into my existing sock formulas.

I got myself one of these immersion blenders and it kicks ass! I made a great yogurt/banana/berry smoothie this morning! I can see I'll use it a lot, especially on work mornings.

So on Tuesday morning we get a call that there's a very fresh wolf kill ... like about 50 yards from my back door! I could look out my bedroom window and see the "crime scene". There's been a lot of wolf activity in and around the townsite lately. The elk and deer have been scarce this winter, it seems, in town - at least in my perception. We haven't seen them around as much as last winter, for example. Anyway, on the path that I travel to walk to and from work, several times I've seen wolf track (and yes, even wolf poo) so I know they've been around. People have reported seeing them either on the outskirts of town or else, as in midweek, walking down in front of the hotel!! The kill appeared to be made by one wolf and the victim was a yearling elk. I got in there and examined all the remains, carcass, evidence and found it quite interesting. It was -24°C when we went out, not accounting for the windchill (and yes, I wore my Pirates toque!!) and the carcass and innards were not frozen yet. So it probably happened a few hours before. Right outside my back door! The night before I heard some howling and whatnot, but didn't see anything when I looked outside. The wardens thought the wolf/ves might come back that evening to continue to snack. I looked out from time to time during the evening, but didn't see anything. The next morning we get another call that the carcass was in the alley, so the wolf did come back, eat some more and started to drag it towards the trees behind my house. The wardens dragged the carcass the rest of the way into the trees. How exciting -- I only wish I could have seen the wolf - from the safety of my bedroom window, of course! yay for poly-pro!

I was especially happy to have some PolarTec long underwear under my uniform today. When I bundled up to walk to work this a.m. it was -30°C with the wind chill. Coming home at 4 it was -32°. Our low tonight is forecast for -37° with a wind chill of -49°. Frosty, indeed! I was pretty toasty warm for both walks, just my hands got a little cold on the way home - should have worn warmer mittens.

This is one of the little rolled-brim hats made with leftover Malabrigo yarn. It's very cute! I have another one started and as it's so freaking cold tonight, I'm just going to sit with my warm blankie and a good dvd and knit, so I will probably finish the next hat tonight as well. Stay warm!

how freaking fABuL0us is this?!

I finished the We Call Them Pirates toque and I love it! I'm already thinking up different colour schemes for the next one!

And here it is on its own - aren't those colours great?! That's Elann's Norwegian Wool:

I finished this off last night and wore it to work today - arrrrgghh!

ring-a-ding-ding, another week gone

this was written Friday night but I didn't upload it

and once again the time has slipped away from me. This week was particularly bad for too little sleep and no self-organization. I did manage to work out every day, though. We had our new bed delivered yesterday, so I slept well last night. It slays me how ... tall this mattress set it. Our old one was one we paid $300 for about 15 years ago. It was pretty crappy and we didn't really notice that until this last vacation where we stayed at some really nice places with very comfortable beds. So feeling like the Princess and the Pea I climbed into bed last night and settled in. Very comfy; I'm sure tonight I'll sleep even better knowing that I don't have to get up early tomorrow.

My lunchtime knitting project is a rolled-brim hat made from some leftover Malabrigo wool. The fewer stitch cast on means the yarn is doing some nice stripey-pooling. I think this will be a really cute hat. I've got some more Malabrigo leftovers to make another, then I have a supply of Patons Classic Wool for more hats.

The other day at work I was thinking about what wool I had in my stash for hats and such and suddenly remembered some orange and red Elann Norwegian Wool. It would be perfect for the pirates toque. The finished size of the hat with Dale Hauk is a bit bigger than would fit me; this Norwegian Wool is just slightly thinner, so I'm getting 6.5 spi instead of the pattern gauge of 6. I think it will fit perfectly! Here is one skull repeat's worth and where I was last night when I put it down to go to bed:

Here's a closer look at the skull motif; I adjusted the colour to be fairly close to true:

Survivor: Where do they get the whackjobs for this freakshow?! Of course I love every minute of it. I didn't think it was fair that Melinda went just because the others arbitrarily decided that based on nothing other than she wasn't "one of them". I think they should have booted Shane; especially because he was all "I don't want to be here" - once you say that, it should be the kiss of death and away you go. No changing your mind or flip-flopping.

Oh, and YAY - new Amazing Race starting in a couple of weeks. I see they are going back to the "real" format, so it will be worth watching. Hmm, who to hate, who to hate?!

We finally are getting a bit of snow the past couple of days. Yesterday was not that cold, but from the inside looking out it was horrible - incredibly windy and blustery, but once outside it wasn't too bad. Today the wind has quite a bite to it and even though it was only about -5° C when I walked to work, in the open spots the wind was brisk. Still not enough snow to snowshoe, but if the tracks get set, it could be decent skiing.

~ ~ ~

Saturday noon. We slept in today - well, we went to bed really early last night, so even though we got up early, we'd both had about 10 hours of sleep. The bed is very comfortable and relaxing. We went out for brunch, also very good, and now the big fella's at work doing paperwork and I'm getting a few things done around the house. I have decided I really need to spend part of my weekends getting organized for the week ahead. While my current workload isn't particularly challenging, I'm still away from home 8 hours of the day and not here to take care of things as I'd like; this past week redefined that point for me in that I was totally unorganized and got nothing accomplished because of that. I wasn't disciplined in getting to bed at a decent hour, not eating well, and it just snowballed all the way to Friday night. So today with a good night's sleep and good breakfast in me, I'm going to make some solid plans and stick to them.

On my list of things to do today is of course work on my pirates hat. I -love- how it's turning out and can't wait to finish it and wear it! It's a great, quick -feral- [™ Jim] project. I am happy to be working on smaller projects right now - they're fun, easy to cart around with me and quicker gratification!

IPJ was great!

I slept late, showered and jumped into fresh new jammies and enjoyed my International Pajama Day. My goal was to knit, relax, watch some dvds, repeat as needed.

These are the Opal Ladybug socks when I sat down to the first dvd.

Here they are finished - finally! I think I started these socks to take on our little vacation mid-November. They have been languishing, neglected, set aside, but finally they're done. I wore them to work today!

After I got home from work, I did some chores, then had an extra-long workout on the punching bag. I am going to feel that tomorrow. I also rolled off my exercise ball backwards and whacked my head on the concrete basement floor - it's hard to try to grab onto something when you're wearing big, fat red boxing gloves!

Anyway, I have a couple of computer things to do, then I'm going to take some of my left-over Malabrigo and make some kid's hats for the Dulaan project. I'm thinking of making some socks with leftover sock yarn as well. I've got lots of yarn and wool that is not enough for an adult's hat or pair of socks, so this will put it to good use.

I also want to make a pair of wrist warmers - I found a very cute pattern in the "Yarn to Dye For" book that uses sock yarn. Another project is the Bzzz hat from the second Stitch 'n Bitch book; it is shaped basically like this free pattern here. As the Dulaan project calls for 100% wool or other warm natural fibres, I have dug through the stash and found some nice Patons Classic Wool and others that will be great for cosy warm hats.

serious lack of knitting

A view of part of my walk to/from work (in lieu of photos of knitting progress).

Have had a very busy week, work and otherwise. I haven't picked up my knitting in ... three days? Had a major satellite internet problem, ran out of time in the evenings to do chores etc. and the knitting suffered. I have, however, managed to have three great punching bag workouts so far this week. [ow!]

I've decided to put into the stash the latest bulky yarn I acquired (the Gedifra) and concentrate on some smaller, fun projects for the near future. I really really need to finish those Opal Ladybug socks - they are languishing at the heel flap stage. I've found a number of very cute hat patterns I want to try (from a variety of sources) and including the We Be Pirates* hat from Hello Yarn. (*properly named "We Call Them Pirates" hat).

But wooo-hooo, tonight a new Survivor starts, so I'm pvr'ing it and will watch it later this evening!
