Kill the Hedgehogs!!

At one point today after work there were four hedgehogs outside in the back yard (???) and a mini hedgehog and a couple others inside. I don't know what Sabby's fascination with taking her stuffed toys outside with her is - perhaps to ensure all the neighbours experience the joy of the squeaker?!

I did end up returning the size (M) lifejacket and the size (L) arrived in the mail yesterday. At lunch we tried it on for size.

And Herself styling it:

This does fit her much better and should serve the purpose of artificial buoyance should she fall overboard or want to try swimming (snerk!).

Knitting has been done - but no pics. Yesterday I got two parcels with yarn and needles and a book. The needles were a longer, smoother circ for the baby afghan (these are Bryspun and seem nice - I only did one row with 'em). The yarn was more for the baby afghan and sock yarn, of course, to round out the order. The book was Vogue Knitting's "Vintage Knit" from Elann. Lots of vintage/older patterns updated for today's yarns, much like Patons Forever Favorites. More pics and linkies next time.

a day late

But look, there's knitting:

The Knit Pick socks as they stand today. Still not even at the heel flap, but getting closer!

The baby afghan I'm making with Patons Astra in "baby variegated". This is a nice dk/sport weight yarn, washable, etc. I had to order more - I originally bought the yarn for a little newborn sweater but instead decided to make the blanket. More yarn is on the way as well as a nicer circular needle. The join on this one is snagging the stitches all the time - grrr!

I had an incident on the weekend with my keyboard and a cup of my fabulous freshly ground and brewed French Roast coffee ... so I bought a new keyboard. I upgraded a bit from my stock Dell! Very cool!

is it winter yet?

No? Then which way's the beach?!

Artsy fartsy shot:

That dog gets more mail than me! Her Chilly Dogs winter coat and head muff ensemble arrived today. It's super thick and cosy polar fleece and some GoreTex type outer layer to keep her toasty warm on those cold December night walks. She's not roasting ... much! This was out in the back yard about 6 p.m.

The life jacket was from Gear 4 Dogs which is a Canadian supplier of Ruffwear K9 Float Coats. I am debating if I should return it for one size larger - but the chest measurement for the large seems too big. I ordered it based on her chest measurement and their fitting chart; this fits her snugly, and I suppose you don't want it flip-flopping around on her.

Life is tough. All that fun and playing and tennis ball chasing and running amok in the yard ....sigh ...

In the "Just because you can knit, doesn't mean you should" department, this offering from the latest (?) InKnitters magazine:

And tomorrow?! Actual! Knitting! Photos!!!

And? in the meantime, go check out Ande's fabulous new hair!!

long weekend and we're loving it!

It's sooo fabooo to have a long weekend (four whole days!) and not have to travel anywhere or have any obligations. It's been quite relaxing so far. I was going to make a couple of entries for the weekend to break it up, but I'm going to dump the whole lot of photos here and now. I worked on my computers yesterday for some hours - my Norton Internet Security software has gone insane and I was trying to wrestle back control. I'm not sure if I've succeeded or not. Anyway, here are the pics:

We took Sabrina out yesterday to walk the Boundary Bog trail. It's a short little trail that goes through the forest and ends up at the eye of the bog - it's really an interesting walk and parts of it are on a boardwalk because of the bogginess of the ... uh ... bog!

I had some photos on my memory card that all didn't get loaded up to the computer. Here's one that cracks my shit up:

This should dispell the myth that greyhounds are high-strung and need extreme amounts of exercise. This was after we'd taken Sabby out for a walk on the Boundary Bog and also a short walk along part of the Waskesiu River trail yesterday.

Sabrina's favourite toys are of the squeaky variety. In particular she lurves the hedgehog:

After we went out for brunch (and left Sabby at home to remember that us leaving isn't a bad thing) we puttered around the house then went for another Bog walk:

The weather has been warm the past few days and lots of snow has melted. It's still quite mucky but that will dry out soon, too. During our walk we tried the self-timer without the self-timer shot and we're getting better. It's that damn long nose of hers ... I need go-go-Gadget arms to get the camera far enough away!

When we got home we played in the yard a bit. Yesterday I got a tennis ball and we rolled it along the length of the back yard and she would give chase. She's sort of bring it back to us, but not really. She's come back to our end of the yard and then lay down. This was after a few relays and she obviously wasn't going to run any more:

Have the cute dog pics distracted you from the lack of knitting progress?! Heh. I have been working on the Knit Pick socks, but they really were very barely started when they got set aside for Festive. I've also been thinking of hats, etc. for Dulaan and also that baby blanket for our friends. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have a knitting picture to post.

If you're a fan of The Sea Hunters there's a few websites online that are interesting to browse (that one on History TV) this one National Geographic as well as the "official" website, Shipwreck Central which has tons of cool videos from whatever dive location they're presently at (check the archives, too). And Jim Delgado also has a site with lots of info and photos.

FO photo

I finished sewing on the frogs two nights ago; after work today the big fella took some pics in the yard:

Generally I am quite pleased with the finished product. I could have sewn the frogs a little closer, but I was worried that the front would pucker if I made it too tight. The pattern was pretty good, but there were a few points where a beginning knitter might have some confusion. I like the long sleeve version and I'm sure I'll get lots of wear from it.

We had some wacky lighting - part shade, part bright sun; I love the expression on Sabrina's face in this one above.

What a sweetie:

almost done

I finished sewing the Festive sweater together and now just have to stitch on the frog closures on the front edges. The photo was taken with them being placed for sewing. I like how it turned out and will post a "modeling" shot once the frogs are sewn on.

I always forget, from sweater to sweater, how I sew in a set-in sleeve. This one was quite easy. I have had ones where you really have to finagle it to get the sleeve cap into the armscye, but this time was smooth.

Sabby supervised and lent moral support to the procedure.

She also supervised the blocking of the sweater pieces yesterday.

Sabrina enjoys the sunshine yesterday in the yard. She sort of blends into her surroundings this time of year.

I baked cupcakes yesterday for us to snack on during movie night. We watched Walk the Line which we all agreed was quite good. As were the cupcakes.

Sabrina helped clean out the entrance closet and put away the winter wear. She liked my faux fur red hat ... although not a good look on her, she wanted to eat the fur!

We had a nice relaxing weekend. We went out for walks, enjoyed being lazy. Sabrina even slept in a little today. I'm all ready for the coming week (and woo hoo, it's a short one with Friday being a Stat holiday!). I'm going to go sew on the frogs for Festive; then it's back to my socks and hats!

Thursday?! Already?!!

We went to town last night after work for supplies. Makes for a very long day, not enough sleep and a long work day today, but at least we're all stocked up and can spend the weekend at our leisure. Yay!

I had the pvr recording The Amazing Race and was quite surprised that it was not a non-elimination round. Sorry to see the nerds go. My luck the non-elimination round will happen when that obnoxious asshole Lake comes in last. Once we got home and unloaded and put away all the supplies I watched the episode. It coming on Wednesday nights instead of Tuesday is messing with me. Go read some snark at TWoP forums. Check out Survivor while you're there.

I was thinking of knitting up a quick baby blanket for an expectant friend. Go look at the Knitting Pattern Central directory for all sorts of free patterns online. Check out the "what's new" link to see the latest links added. Lots of cute baby stuff, and everything else, too.

I have finished knitting the second sleeve for my long-sleeve version of Festive. I'll weave in ends tonight and figure out how to block it without putting in the path of Sabrina and her paws. I am very much looking forward to completing this project and perhaps getting a few wearings of it this spring. Once it's completed, I'll focus on some smaller, fast projects for a while. (And finish those darn Knit Picks socks!)

another weekend over

This one, however, was much more laid back than last weekend, so we all feel rested and content. Yesterday it was a warm, sunny spring day so we went out for a drive, and a little hike. There's still tons of snow on the hiking trails, but once it melts and dries up, this will be a favourite one for the three of us:

Sabrina before she saw a cheeky squirrel and was all ears, straining at the leash!

She doesn't quite get the concept of the "we don'n need no steenkin' self-timer" self-timer pics:

Back at the car (oh yeah, it's new):

Doing what she does best "get the gator!":

I actually managed to finish all our laundry, get our uniforms ironed for the week and still have time to do some knitting and reading! I flipped through a stack of knitting magazines while I had my coffee this morning. Some of them I'm really wondering why I bought them. Mostly I find that with the summer issues. I hate cotton and knitting with cotton and don't like cotton blends, either, so most of the designs in the warm-weather issues don't appeal. I did find some projects that I had bookmarked out of some winter issues, so I'll file that knowledge away for a rainy day. For now, I'm working on my second Festive sleeve (about 1/2 done) and hope to get that project off my WIP list soon. Then I will indulge myself in some socks and hats and other small projects before I embark on Starsky.
