Will the rain ever end?!
It seems like it's been raining for months; certainly for the last week pretty much steady. You'd think that a person would have lots of knitting time. I'd like that to be the case, but it seems not. I managed to finish a cute hat for Dulaan - this was made with Cascade Quatro which was a gift from the Better Pal exchange. Nice wool! I used 4 mm dps and got a nice warm fabric.

Wonderfully modeled by Sabrina Fair.
As the weather was so rotten most of the weekend, Sabrina took advantage of prime napping time:

I'm detecting a theme here ...

Those sharp-eyed among you will note the matching Princess fleece blanket (her princess pillow is usually on the couch unless she has been vigorous in her nesting and it gets tossed off).
Tonight I plan to cast on for some socks for Dulaan using fabulous Regia 6-ply. Regia is my favourite sock yarn and the 6-ply will make thick, cosy warm socks for those kids!

hedgehog conventionLast night I gathered all the hedgehogs in need of surgery and squeak-ectomies and under Sabrina's watchful eyes (both of 'em, glued intently to what I was doing) fixed them all up.
The big fella lined them all up (eight big ones and one baby) but Sabby couldn't stand it!
Some time later Sabby was confident she'd put the hedgehogs in their place and had a little nap amid the hedgehog carnage.
I was messing around online when this happened:
Could I look any more suspicious, snooty, bitchy?! Hey, it was a hard week.
And knitting - but not progress; I think I'm going to rip this out:
I thought I'd use this Lion Brand Jiffy Thick and Quick for a rolled brim sort of hat, but the biggest dps I had on hand were 8 mm and the ball band gauge calls for 12 mm. It's just to hard to work with at that gauge and I don't think the resulting fabric would be very comfortable to wear. I'm going to rip it out and use the yarn for a lacy scarf or something - using whatever biggest straights I have. I'll have to start the hat with some other great wool I have in the stash. Or, I could work on the baby afghan a while, or I could start another hooded cardigan with the Elann wool.

FO! Knitting! The pattern is here (hooded baby cardigan). The yarn I used is Patons Canadiana in colour #411 which is such a nice aqua variegation, but I can't get the colour to reproduce true in the photos.
Sabrina seems reluctant to embrace the life of a knitwear model.
I didn't get a chance last night to do any knitting; I want to make some more hats for the Dulaan Project but could also make another of the hooded baby sweaters in the largest size. I have some nice Elann Peruvian Collection wool in a nice heathery blue that would work.
Even though it was a short week with Monday being a stat, I'm still beat. Early night tonight, for sure.

It has not been over a weeksince I last posted, has it? Man, time flies and all that. Last Sunday we went for a nice walk with Sabrina on the Freight Trail (a different section of it) and I had photos and everything! Consequently, this entry will be heavily laden with photos and blathering on:
We love that vibrant, fresh new leaf green. It kinda matches the big fella's shirt! The trees have filled out even in the week since this photo was taken. Sort of a sky shot for Sandy.
Still working on the "self portrait" concept. I think I need a wide angle lens to get that looong nose of Sabrina's in the frame.
Some pretty spring flowers. What you can't see is the huge pile of wolf poo just next to it. We saw tons and tons of wolf poo on this trail and Sabrina had to stop and investigate each and every one of 'em!
Mr. Pig! Mr. Pig! Sabby has Mr. Pig! (Our dearly departed Shepherd was insane about Mr. Pig and often sat in this exact position.)
Fast forward through the week. I had ordered some time ago some Doggles for Sabrina. They had a problem supplying the black ones that I wanted, so after waiting a couple of weeks, I got them to send the camo ones. At first, the princess wasn't happy.
I told her how much fun we would have riding in the boat on the lake and she changed her attitude, although I detect an aura of resignation here:
I also ordered some boots for her - when we're out in thirty below weather, she'll thank me for it:
I actually did manage to get some knitting done this week. I am working on the second sleeve of the cute little baby cardigan. The pattern is here and it's the hooded baby cardigan.
The yarn is Patons Canadiana in a really lovely aqua/turquoise/white variegation. The photo does not do it justice. Once I'm done and have washed it and it's ready to go, I'll get a proper daylight photo.
I had a number of chores to do yesterday and today - even though today is a stat holiday, I still have lots to do. In the midst of doing laundry it was time to change the sheets. Sabrina has become quite comfortable hopping up on the bed whenever we go near it (no doubt to get the best spot). I was trying to strip the bed and replace the linens. After I pulled the comforter off the bed with her dead weight on it, she decided she wasn't going to budge:
   ah, success at last!
Lots more to do today, so I'd better get at it!

dulaan The garter stitch scarf and seed-stitch brim hat, so enthusiastically modelled by Sabrina. I'm thinking I'll do a garter stitch border on the next one.
Sunday is laundry day - but I got a jump on it yesterday. Hopefully we'll get out for a nice walk on one of the trails, if the mosquitoes don't carry us away!

while the cat's away ... the greyhound will steal the bed! The big fella is away all week on business. Princess Sabrina keenly feels his absence - one of the pack is missing. Monday she was quite upset that he didn't come home at 4 p.m. We had a pretty rotten night because she wouldn't settle, was tossing and turning in her crate and every time she did so, it woke me up. I evaluated my options and had a conference call with the big fella and this was the solution we came up with:
I had to really encourage her to jump up on the bed last night, but she quickly settled in and fell fast asleep. We both slept much better and awoke refreshed. I'd been making a point of getting up early enough to take her out for 20 minutes or so before leaving for work, at lunch and we were able to have a nice long walk after supper as well so she certainly got her exercise. Monday night we had our first big thunderstorm of the season and weren't able to get out for our walk. The storm didn't bother Sabrina at all, about which I was pleased.
Even the hedgehogs like to look out the window!
Ptewee - spitting the hedgehog out to concentrate on the seagull (that little white speck on the road) boldly walking down the middle of Sabrina's street.
I finished the garter stitch scarf I'd been working on with two strands of Patons Classic Wool. It will be very warm and drapey. I was commenting to Ande that I thought the garter stitch scarf often got a bum rap. It's a very versatile stitch and the fabric it produces is stretchy and cosy and huggable. Use a gorgeous variegated wool and it's a masterpiece! Also for a different look, knit the scarf lengthwise!
I started a hat with another ball of Lorna's Laces Bullfrogs & Butterflies. I'm doing a seed stitch border instead of a rolled brim. Once I have a bit more progress, I'll throw up a pic.
My new assignment at work is going well - I've had a ton of reading to do and find if I take notes as I read it helps my comprehension and retention. And I have my office space sorted out and feel quite comfy there.

Saturday, May 6
weekends are great!Especially when I woke up at 6:15 this a.m. thinking I had to go to work - and then the pleasant surprise when I realized it was, in fact, Saturday! Yay indeed.
I finished the Knit Picks socks. These poor socks dragged on and on and ON and I have subsequently lost the ball band and can't tell you what colour scheme they were. Turned out great, though!
I'm going to work on the baby blanket as well as some more items for the Dulaan Project. See this link too. Both projects (our friends' baby and Dulaan) have the same deadline, but I hope to accomplish both.
The big fella took Sabby out for a nice early morning walk and she put her feet in the lake. Last night when we girls were out walking, we went down part of the Kingfisher Trail because we saw some elk in the water along the shore across the bay. They were making their way around the shore to our location. Sabby watched with intent interest. After several minutes the elk walked into the trees and away from the shore so they no longer held her interest. Then she explored the shore a bit and put her front paws in the water. No drinking of the water, but at least she knows what it is.
The weather is supposed to be nice for the weekend so tomorrow we'll likely go out and do another trail. I'm trying to get Sabrina accustomed to drinking water on the trail from a sports squeeze bottle (like our friends' dogs do) so we don't have to cart along her collapsible bowl and water bottles, etc. Not that she's high-maintenance or anything. Heh.
After we got back from another walk after lunch today, I took la princessa out in the back yard and gave her a spa treatment - nails, ears, coat, etc. She even had some Avon Skin-so-soft oil diluted with water sprayed on her to help with her dry skin. She was quite relaxed when it was all over.
Now she's out joy-riding with the big fella in the FrankenBuick. I'm going to fill my coffee mug, get my knitting and go enjoy the sun and warmth in the back yard.

Monday, May 1
don't be a heel After what seemed like forever, I finally turned the heels and am working on the gussets of the Knit Pick Socks. Great colours and I decided to extend the 3x1 ribbing down the instep for some visual interest and better fit (although plain stocking stitch is much faster). The baby blanket has not been worked on since the last photo.
A quiet weekend - we had to run some errands on Saturday but still had time to relax.
Apparently all that relaxing required a serious nap from which to recover:
Extreme close up - and yes, she's fast asleep:
While it's raining now and was fairly dark and cool all day, yesterday was warm and sunny and a perfect day for a hike in the forest.
(The big fella commits the cardinal photographer's sin - I have a tree growing out of my head!)
The latest version of the family self-portrait. Yeah, she still doesn't "get" it. Heh.
I started a new assignment today. It's a two year project and should be quite challenging and rewarding. I like the fact that it's a specific project with goals and objectives. It will certainly keep me on my toes! But now I'm off to knit. I've been thinking I should finish these socks quick-like and then get back to my Dulaan knitting as that deadline is coming up quickly.
