it's too damn hot

to do much of anything. After work I went out for a bike ride - I thought the slight breeze would be enough to compensate for the near 30°C temps and keep the horse and black flies away, but it didn't. I had a miserable ride. Note to self: look into early morning rides instead. Although that would necessitate actually getting out of bed when the alarm goes and not hitting snooze an indeterminate amount of times.

Exciting times here ...

On Sunday we actually were able to sit outside in the back yard for a little bit - the wind, heat and cosmic conditions were all favourable and we weren't pestered too badly by bugs. The big fella and Sabrina look with consternation at a bug that dared to encroach upon Her Highness's blanket.

I have been making slow, but steady progress on the baby blanket. I am anxious to get this done so that I can start one of several cool new projects that I either have yarn for, or have ordered yarn for. If only I could find more time to knit, my world would be perfect!

Sunday, June 25

a whodunit ...

The big fella and I went out for brunch with some people. We all met here, Sabrina was much admired and feted, then we callously left her behind while we walked to the hotel to enjoy a nice Sunday brunch. When we got back, we immediately took the little princess out for a nice loooong walk, lots of sniffing and walking, doing her business. When we returned, I walked into the bedroom to see this:

Hmmm. That's not where I left that ball of yarn. And I'm pretty sure it was all wrapped up in a nice little cake with the ball band secured around it. Let's examine the evidence a little closer:

Now I'm no forensic dentist, but I think it's not a stretch to say that the holes in the yarn wrapper were caused by canine teeth, as in some canine's CANINE teeth! Sabby, however, disavows any and all knowledge:

I have no knitting to show you - I have been working on the baby blanket, it looks the same as the last photo I posted, just longer. I got a couple of patterns and the Vogue Stitchionary 2 (cable stitches) from Elann. I'm going to finish off the baby blanket before I embark on any thing else, but I've been spending a lot of time thinking about future projects and there are a few likely candidates.

What I come home to every day

And one from a couple of weeks ago when Sabrina was "helping" me change the sheets:

In other news, the big fella arrived home, much to Sabby's relief! It's a wet, blustery, windy day but we went out for over an hour for a walk, the three of us, and relatively few mosquitoes. Things are looking up!

My attempts to cheer Sabby up have met with limited success

That is the baby afghan I'm working on, pattern is here but that link launches the pdf file. You can find it on the list here - it's the Lots of Love Grandma's Afghan. I'm using Patons Astra in the Baby Variegated colourway. I like it. I adjusted the pattern for the smaller gauge yarn.

So Princess Sabrina has been upset because the pack has splintered. The big fella has been out of town and returns tomorrow after six days away. She's not happy. I have been taking her for lots of walks, with varying levels of mosquito attacks - if they're not horribly bad, it's way too hot to stay out long. So she's unhappy about that as well.

No, she's not spoiled rotten - why do you ask?!

After I got home from work and did some stuff, I took Sabby out for a walk - earlier than we normally go. I thought she would enjoy a dip in the lake and I wore my flip-flops so I could wade in with her. The lake was rough, but she enjoyed the coolness - even though a wave dunked her and she came up sputtering. All was well ... until we exited the lake and a swarm of horseflies were on us like, well, flies to shit. We practically ran home, then they were swarming us at the door - poor Sabby was freaking out and snapping at them and trying to outrun them, me dangling on the end of the leash trying to keep up. We got home probably hotter than before we'd been in the lake. I rubbed her down and positioned the fan so the someone less stifling air on the shady side of the house is blowing in. A few liver treats and I think she's feeling better now. Poor pooper!

look - an actual post!!

It's been pouring down rain most of the week. We are all going to float away, I'm sure. The mosquitoes are absolutely horrendous - you can't be outside and stand still for a second or they're on you. Poor Sabrina is most frustrated by them. We go out for walks and can't go too long because they are so vicious and bite, bite, bite. With her short fur they really torment her. When she stops to sniff a tree or flower a black cloud of mosquitoes envelopes her. I try to brush them away, but we have to slow our pace to do that and that just encourages more to hop on her. Poor pooper! I'm seriously thinking about some kind of bug jacket for her.

I finished knitting the pullover baby sweater. This is the largest size and I converted the pattern to be a pullover. It's already packaged up in the Dulaan parcel (being mailed today) and I forgot to measure it to see how much bigger it turned out than the pattern as my gauge was a little bigger than what was called for. Probably fit a two-year old, I'd guess.

Sabrina, the reluctant knitwear model

Now that my Dulaan project knitting is done, I'll get back to the baby afghan. I finally got a nice bamboo circular that doesn't have any snaggy joins or too-pointy tips, so I hope to make good progress on that in the next weeks.

rainy weekend

A good stay to stay home and relax. The big fella and Sabrina are laying on the bed watching a dvd (with their eyes closed) and I'm doing laundry and puttering around online.

Sabby is enthralled to be modeling the baby sweater in progress.

I'm using Elann's Peruvian Wool (doesn't it come in a great array of colours?!) and the hooded baby cardigan pattern except I've turned it into a pullover. I'm making it in the largest (18 month) size. My gauge is a little bigger than the pattern calls for, so the finished product should be a little bigger than 18 months.

I certainly do prefer knitting with wool than acrylic. I can definitely see making this again (with the Peruvian wool) in larger sizes - take any top-down raglan pattern and adapt it for a hood.

I finished these on the weekend

These are kid sized socks for the Dulaan project. I used Regia 6-ply sock yarn in colour #5260. Great looking socks!

I have since started another hooded baby cardigan with a few alterations. I'm using Elann's Peruvian Wool (fab colour selection!) and making it a pull over, not a cardigan. This wool is sooo nice. I will definitely be using more of this. I'll get a photo of the in-progress sweater in the next day or two.

Saturday, June 3

well, THAT was a week!

It's a good thing I have the big fella and Sabrina to come home to. When I walk up the sidewalk and see that little greyhound face peering out the window ... :-) she knows when it's 4 p.m. and she's catching on to when it's noon.

You can see the big fella's resolve to only let Sabby on the bed when he was away has faltered. She jumps up in between us and makes herself comfortable. His excuse now not to get another greyhound is that we'd need to buy a bigger bed. Heh.

I have been working on the Regia 6-ply socks for the Dulaan project. If I managed to do more than a couple rounds a day, they'd be done already. I have the heels turned and both gussets decreased by now.

After our mid-day walk (and subsequent laying in the lake) I gave Sabrina a glamour treatment - brushed her coat, clipped her nails, chamois'd her down. She looked mah-velous, dahlink!
