Monday, July 31
smile, it's Monday!

Yesterday we sat outside, sipped club soda with a twist of lime (and ice) and relaxed. Well, Sabrina passed on the club soda but she was all for the relaxation.
We just got back in from the most fabulous walk we've had in a while. The past few days have been cooler; we like that. Tonight there was quite a strong wind off the lake [hence no bugs], the waves were crashing on shore and the sun was shining. There seemed to be very few people around and it was soooo enjoyable. Loved it.
I've got some sort of mistake [gasp] on my wrap cardi. I can't figure out if I dropped a stitch on the previous row or accidentally knit 2 together. I was watching Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares last night and obviously not minding my knitting. I need to go sort that out.
hmm - for some reason it's getting dark out. I guess the days are getting shorter; plus it's clouding over. But this is the first night I've noticed the daylight going so early. Yay - that means autumn is on its way!!

Saturday, finallyWow, had a bit of a long, hectic week. I slept in today, then read a book in bed until 10 a.m. That was a nice treat. Sabby got the big fella up for her walk at 6 a.m. as per weekdays, but they came back to bed when they were done.
My business trip went well; was pretty productive. The two 12-hour work days kicked my ass, though. Wednesday was travel day back to the park. Then two days at work. So I was glad when 4 p.m. rolled around yesterday. We both have stuff to do around the house over the weekend, but we're moving pretty slowly.
I sure missed the little princess while I was away! (oh, and of course the big fella, but that goes without saying!)
I only got knit on my sock a bit on the plane Monday morning. I drove us from here to the airport (2.5 hour drive) and also back on Wednesday. The rest of the time, well, there was no time for knitting.
Thursday night I was still pretty beat, but I did start the wrap cardigan. It's top down, and I have just a few rows done, but once again I have to remark on how nice Elann's Peruvian Collection Highland Wool is. The pattern doesn't have any waist shaping - I'd like to add some in, but I wonder if it's necessary with the side-tie and wrap? I'll have to think about that.
The temps have finally cooled down a little here. Sabrina and I have had two consecutive evening walks of at least an hour in duration along the lakeshore. Very nice, refreshing and relaxing. For some reason the people thin out about 6:30 on the lakeshore, so it's like having the place to ourselves for that little bit.

got any eggs?'cause it's hot enough to fry 'em on the sidewalk. Stinking hot. So hot it sucks the breath out of you when you step outside. We are sooooo glad we bought our little portable air conditioner when we did. Apparently they're temporarily sold out.
Sabby knows air conditioning is good. I have been trying to listen to an online broadcast of Greyhounds Make Great Pets - they have a weekly segment and a recent one (July 7) talks about what our dogs' lives were like at the track. I haven't listened to it in its entirety but one comment was made that they're only out in the heat for those 30 or so seconds that they are racing - they live in air conditioned kennel buildings, they are transported from place to place in air conditioned vehicles and trailers, etc. So even though they have been in quite hot climates, they weren't exposed to them that much. The past few days Sabrina has been content to laze around the house. We went to town last night for my 25-year high school reunion (more on that in a minute) and when we got back, we took Sabby out for a walk. It was 11 p.m. and still quite warm, but there was a spring in her step.
During the drive back, we watched a huge storm cell that did end up being north of us and we didn't get any storm activity in Waskesiu. The photo is very blurry - long exposure times while we're driving on our very rough, crappy Saskatchewan highways. But the cloud formations were really bizarre and there was lightning inside the clouds, and occasionally snaking down to the earth.
Anyway, the reunion. I didn't go to the 10 year one. I decided we'd go to this one. I had sent in my current photo and write-up a long time ago and paid for the supper. But yesterday I was all angsty - almost to the point that we didn't go. What is it about high school that can do that to us?! Anyway, we met three friends of mine at their hotel room for a drink first, then we headed over. As soon as we came in the door I saw so many familiar faces, but some I couldn't put a name to right away. They, however, all came up to me and said, "Terri, you haven't changed a bit!". I don't know if that's good or not, but I'm taking it as a positive. heh. It was interesting to see everyone. The meal was superb and we watched a little PowerPoint presentation that showed our high school photos then our current-day photos and a little blurb about what we're doing. I really enjoyed that. We left close to 10 p.m. and I was content to leave then. In retrospect, I'm glad we went.
The swatching continues here:
The brown is Elann's Peruvian Collection Highland Wool in coffee bean brown. I had to use a 4.5 mm needle (the top portion) to get the required gauge for the wrap-around cardi. The blue swatch in progress is Lang's Musica which may be used for the Evening Star top from the summer Interweave Knits.
I've been packing up some work things and my gear for three days of meetings away from the park. I'll have some knitting (socks) with me, but I don't know if I'll have any time to give to it. Hope so!

another first for SabrinaShe went to a pow wow yesterday! Our Aboriginal Affairs manager hosted a two-night pow wow in the day use area of the townsite in celebration of the Paspiwin Cultural Heritage Site. They asked the big fella to attend the opening entrance ceremony in red serge. It was so colourful and interesting to see all the different costumes of the dancers.
[I love the sunglasses along with the ... uh ... white buffalo ? headpiece]
It was nice to see so many young people involved in the dancing. They all had such beautifully created costumes; I was disappointed I couldn't get better photos. I think because they were under a tent and the background was bright sunshine my camera was confused as to what shutter speed to use - and used too slow a speed to freeze the action. However, the blurriness does convey movement, I suppose.
After the elders, veterans, dignitaries and dancers entered the tent, they formed a circle around the edges. These are some of the women dancers.
I had to include this one for two reasons - the cute little boy and his costume, but also the adult dancer in black. Sabrina almost had a mouthful of his feathers while we were waiting for the ceremony to start. He was standing near us and Sabrina ever-so-casually sauntered to the end of her leash. I glanced at her, saw that she wasn't going to bother him, then I watched as she telescoped her neck about eight inches further and opened her jaws to taste some eagle feathers!! He escaped unscathed, probably never knowing how close he came to greyhound feather assault!
My two sweeties! She's keeping her eyes on the dancers. Again, I am amazed at how well she did in a big crowd, lots of sounds - singing, drumming, loud speakers, etc. Little kids running up to her, the dancers - which are out of her normal realm. What a good dog!
Elann had some Socka/Fortissima 6- ply sock yarn that I had to snatch up. I can never find 6-ply sock yarn when I want to, so this justifiably needed to be added to the stash. I included my toe (bottom left) because in the upper left is Sabby's tail.
One of the two swatches I did for the Marble yarn. I tried with a 4 mm needle and got 19 st/25 rows for 4". The pattern calls for 22/30. I dropped down to a 3.5 mm and got 21 st/29 rows; close enough. And the fabric is nice and firm. I'm going to finish swatching the yarns I have before I start anything new yet. Next up is the Elann Peruvian Collection Highland wool.
It wouldn't be an entry without gratuitous Sabrina photos:

Sunday, July 16
We, and all the members of the RCMP family are very saddened and upset by this. There's a lengthier story here.
I haven't posted in over a week - this will be a long one! I finished the baby blanket yesterday and am happy with how it turned out. I used Patons Astra in colour #2721, baby variegated. The pattern I used was this one. I still used the 225 stitch cast on and with the sport/dk weight yarn got a blanket about 45" wide.

And here's a close-up of the stitch pattern:

I started a pair of socks for the big fella last night using this yarn in colour #1003. I only just cast on and did a few rounds of ribbing; no real progress to show yet.
A few orders of yarn have made their way to my post office box in the past couple of weeks. Now I have the fun task of deciding which project to embark upon next. I have to do some business traveling next week, so the socks will be good and portable for that, but I want to start another project - sweater, etc.

This is Highland Wool in colour 306 coffee bean brown which mysteriously isn't on their colour palette right now. It is to be used for the Knitting Pure & Simple's #263 wrap cardi. I also have the pattern #224, weekend pullover and I think some suitable yarn in the stash. Although I'm not interesting in knitting a bulky weight sweater at this time.
The other yarn is Lang Musica Color in colour 0034 (?) or 336 which is twilight blue something, which also is not on the current colour card. I bought it with an idea of making the Evening Star top in the latest Interweave Knits. I don't know yet if this is a workable substitute for the yarn called for. I'll have to swatch a bit and see. I like the colourway, though. I'm not a big fan of knitting with cotton, but this might be okay.
There's also the Marble yarn in denims and berries, to make a shrug/cardigan with this pattern. I'm pretty sure "denims" is the same colourway as Brenda's and I hope it looks as fabOO as hers! I'm leaning towards starting this project because I love the colourways of the yarn.
I also have yarn on hand for Starsky in Elann's Peruvian Collection Highland Chunky in redwood which has been mellowing in the stash for a few months.
I'm sure there's a couple other projects I have in the back of my mind, but at the moment I can't think of them. We are enjoying a quiet weekend. The big fella had to work yesterday, but we had the treat of lunching out with a friend (hi Bonnie!) that we hadn't seen in a couple of years, so quite enjoyed that. Friday after work I "played" tennis with a friend. The tennis courts are directly across the street from us, so I'm sure we entertained the big fella and Sabby. I use the word "played" very loosely. We go out there with a basket of balls and whack the ball back and forth, pulling muscles, swearing, hacking at it with our raquets, sweating! We accost passers-by to throw back over the fence the balls that soared out of the court with amazing speed and altitude. It was a blast! I do have a few achey muscles yesterday and today. Then after that we took Sabrina for a walk and ran into her "boyfriend". Someone in the community has a gorgeous Afghan Hound, so we let the two of them play together in his yard, then we took them out for a long walk. They caused quite a stir, they're both so striking in their unique ways. Sabrina so enjoyed being with "her people" as Afghans are also sighthounds and the physical similaries are many - under that mop of fur, his bone structure is very much the same.
Random goofy Sabrina pics:

Sabrina spends as much time sleeping in her crate as she does on the couch and on our bed. This is the largest crate size available and since we've taken the crate door off, she can really stretch out and relax.

Greyhounds do quite often sleep with their eyes open - sometimes they're at half-mast and you can see the pupils, but other times they're rolled back in their skulls and you get the delightful white of the eye. Freaky!

I'm off to do that final load of laundry, sit and knit a bit, then get ready for supper. We're going to have a friend (or two?) over for steaks - yum!

another hectic weekIt was a challenging and interesting work week. Even though we had Monday as a holiday, the week still seemed quite long and arduous. But it ended great - and now it's the weekend! We had a thunderstorm during the afternoon and had some rain and that cooled the temps down. I think by Sunday it will be hot again, but for now we have the windows open and the fresh air coming through. It's raining right now.
I had the fabulous luck to get to go for a helicopter ride after work. It has been some (20?) years since I've been in a chopper. Very cool.
We flew over town a couple of times - that's my house by the white arrows!
Kingsmere Cabin, which I have seen in all seasons - but never from the air!
 Hee!! I rode shotgun!
Cool dials - dunno what they mean, but they kept us up in the air. :-)
One of the beautiful creeks that flow in/out of our lakes. So green and vibrant!
I have done some knitting and am still working on the baby afghan. I really hope to make more progress this weekend. Sabby was sick a couple of days - off her food, eating grass (then puking it up on my living room carpet), upset stomach, etc. I think it is partially the heat. Even with the air conditioner (which we bought mainly for her comfort - but we're enjoying it, too) the house can be quite warm when it's unendingly 30°C plus day after day. We have had a lot of forest fire smoke - incredibly thick and hazy even though the fires are 200 km away. So buggy, muggy and smokey. Blech.
Anyway, I cooked her some rice and mixed it with pumpkin last night and this morning; and tonight she got some ground beef and kibble and she's gobbled that up. Her personality and demeanor has been the same happy little dog, so we didn't think it was anything too serious. The big fella had today off, so she enjoyed having him around the house while I was at work. So TGIF!

Sunday, July 2
belated Happy Canada Day! As every July 1, the big fella marched in the Canada Day parade. I had absolutely no intention of going - I had a long list of housework to do. He pouted until I agreed I would come and bring Sabrina, too. The parade was okay - but the real star was Sabrina. She did so very well with all the throngs of people crowding her, the little foo foo dogs, kids, loud noises, etc. Well done!
After her public appearance, she was plumb tuckered out:
I had an order of yarn Friday from Mary Maxim:
The Marble yarn is to make this cardi. I like the pattern and the colours are very nice. I also got one ball of Sirdar Yoyo in a turquoise shade. It's one big 400 g ball of monochromatic/gradient colour. There's instructions on how to knit the front from the outside of the ball and the back from the inside of the ball to sort of match. I don't know what pattern I'll use - it came with a free pattern from Mary Maxim, but the label also has a pattern on it. I have been working diligently on the baby afghan - it's coming along, but slowly. I am pleased with how it's working up, but eager to finish it so I can start something new. I will work on it some more this afternoon as I do laundry. I have three balls of yarn left, so I'll keep going until I run out!
