another post
to see if Blogger is still fubar'd. In other news, I skied again yesterday after work (we had to wear our headlamps because we started too late and it got dark) and it's snowing hard today.

you know, I like wolves, really I dojust not to meet one down the dark back alley while walking the princess!!! I turned around immediately and hustled back to our front door, but it was too big to be a fox and didn't seem to be any of the few domestic dogs that are in town. I wasn't going to stick around to get a closer look.
So I'm assuming blogger still has its head up its ass. I got one canned response from their "support" team that basically did nothing for me. Hopefully this weekend I will have some time to look into some other options. Thanks, Lori, for your suggestions.
We have been skiing three times this week after work. If we hurry home, change into our ski gear and hit the trail, we have enough daylight to complete the 5.6 km Wapiti trail. The snow conditions are fantastic. We could use some more, just so they can groom the trails again, but if not, they're still very good. I have muscle aches everywhere - it really is a full-body and cardio work out. When we go on the weekend I'll take my camera - it's just gorgeous scenery with all the snow sparkling on the boughs of the trees.
Not much knitting these evenings - a little bit on the 6-ply socks. I have started one heel flap and the other one is holding at that point. I have some tv to watch, so I'm headed for the couch and the socks after this.

by the way ...the permalink on these posts supposedly doesn't exist, and comments won't work either. Fuckers. If anyone knows of a good blog software that I can have on my own server, please email me at royea1ATsasktelDOTnet and tell me all about it. I can't figure out if Typepad will let me have my files on my own server space or not. And I don't mind paying for a service, but as long as it's not incredibly complicated and will let me keep my files on my own server. Let me know!!!
To get around blogger's pathetic fucked-up-edness, I coded a redirect to the knitfiend html page to load the December archive page.

trying it againI tried for HOURS yesterday to publish this post. It won't show up on the main KnitBlog page, but does appear in the appropriate archive page. ???
crazy time
Another week gone. My job/project is really sucking the life outta me. It's going along fine, but it's really consuming. This week was particularly hectic. There was a deadline (not so much my deadline, but an important deadline in the project) and lots of last-minute franticness. (Is that a word? It should be!) However, I tried to leave that behind when I walked out of there yesterday. [exhale]
I've been doing little bits of things today at home. The big fella had to work today (but also got called out during the night, so it woke us all up). Last night I finished the Malabri-faux hat I'd started on my flight back from Ottawa.
This was some Uruguayan merino I'd picked up in my travels. I had thought it would be like MMMMmalabrigo, but it wasn't. It was quite unevenly spun and seemed very rough/harsh to the touch. This is Rio de la Plata merino wool and the colourway is "Multicolor M-63". The colours are nice enough, but it ain't no Malabrigo, yo!
 (Are my eyes ... crooked?!)
Our intrepid knitwear model, Sabrina:
This modeling is such tiresome work.
It's quite apparent to me that I will in no possible way have the big fella's (stalled) seamless hybrid ready for his birthday on the 21st, nor for Christmas. Oh well.
I can now turn my attention back to the ever-so-long languishing three pairs of socks that are huddled in a pathetic little heap in a basket here in my computer room. I should be able to finish at least one pair before the 25th ...
edited to add - for some reason blogger won't publish this post, yet it appears in the archives????

Sunday, December 3
now that's more like it!Yesterday was a long day - I was up at 5 a.m. Sask time to get to the Ottawa airport and catch my flight. I had a stop-over in Toronto for a couple of hours, then the flight to Saskatoon. And then another 2.5 hours of driving after that. So it was dark when I got home. But I looked at the window as I pulled up and there was that little grey face watching for me!
I had an early night and was able to sleep in this morning (apart from being up at 6:30 to feed the princess because she refused to eat yesterday until I got home; her stomach was gurgling so loud it woke me up). Later on after lunch we ventured out into the yard.
It had warmed up to about -20°C. Sabrina tried to outrun the cold.
Hmm. Maybe if I run the other way:
Sabrina tries her psychic powers to let me know she's cold and wants to go in.
Later in the afternoon we three went out for a [brief] walk. I can't believe how much snow we have - especially since I left on Monday morning.
The big fella has been kept busy shoveling.
On my return flight(s) I knit the Malabrigo hat. It turned out good. I remembered to start the crown shaping earlier, so it fits perfectly.
This is Malabrigo merino, colourway "Solymar". I love it.
Sabrina models with her usual panache.
So back at it tomorrow. I can only imagine the massive number of voice mails I'll have to contend with, being away for a full week. Ugh. How many more days until the weekend?!

Friday, December 1
fuck this - give me my 30° below! This Ottawa weather is whacked. Yesterday it absolutely POURED all day long. A group of us went out at lunch and got thoroughly drenched; it was still +15°C though. Crazy. I dried out during the afternoon, then walked back to the hotel when I was done at the office - about 2 km. The rain had settled to a drizzle, but soon came down full force again. A couple of us went out for supper and some shopping at "the Glebe" (and I was out until 10 p.m.!) Lots of really great little stores, in particular Glebe Trotters, a Blundstone vendor. A pair of the black chisel toe came home with me. I wore them all day today in my travels.
Anyway, back to my rant about Ottawa's craptastic weather. I had purposely delayed my return flight a day so I could spend today touring some museums, etc. as I'd never been to Ottawa before; while I was here ... good plan, no? Well, the weather forecast was the shits for today, but I was happier when I got up this morning and by the time I was ready to go, the freezing rain had turned to big, fat white fluffy snowflakes - just like home! So I set out, walked the 3+ km to the Civilization Museum, via the Parliament buildings, the National Archives and the Supreme Court of Canada building.
A view of the Parliament buildings from across the river (you can see the Rideau Locks in the corner).
As I was crossing the Alexandra Bridge to Gatineau (Hull), the weather turned crappier. It slid back into freezing rain. I had raccoon eyes when I got to the museum. (And didn't notice until I'd been there a while and went to the washroom. Whatever happened to common courtesy - girls, if you see someone with makeup trouble, would it kill you to say "oh, the washroom is over there; you might want to check your mascara". Is it too much to ask???? Hmph, unless they thought I was some sort of goth failure.)
I spent a good couple of hours in the museum; it was all quite interesting. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do once I left there, so I had a quick bite to eat in their cafeteria, then started to walk back. Man, the freezing rain was quite persistent as I crossed the bridge again. By the time I got across the bridge and down the block to a Chapters I was soaked through and miserable. I browsed the store a good 45 minutes before braving the rest of the walk to the hotel. I decided to walk down the Sparks Street Mall. The wind was howling down the street, the rain was pelting through my clothes and dripping down the back of my neck. I had my new hat on, so my head was warm, but the rest of me .... brrrr. I stopped in two little tourist shops to try and buy an Ottawa snowglobe, but the clerks in both stores were amazingly rude, so I left. [I was surprised about that. I had reflected yesterday how this week being over in Gatineau, I was impressed that as soon as someone spoke French to me and I said I didn't understand, they'd switch to English right away.] As I got closer to my hotel, there were sheets of freezing rain/ice flying off the sides of the office towers and it was kind of scary, so I was quite happy to hurry back here and got here before 3 p.m. I'm sitting here in my jammie pants (my jeans were drenched) and the cashmere sweater I put on this morning. At least now I'm warm and dry.
This hat is a easy peasy quick knit. I used Katia Mexico (50% wool 50% acrylic) worsted weight; colour 5853. I made the hat too long before I started the crown decreases, (again!) but if I turn up the 3 x 3 ribbing, it's a perfect fit. I've made a note on my PDA to start the crown shaping about an inch sooner.
I've started another similar hat, but this one is with MMMMalabrigo. I can't wait to finish this one and wear it.
Anyway, I was disappointed that I didn't get to more museums; the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography which I really, really wanted to visit, is of course closed for construction for an undetermined time. They did have some exhibits at the National Gallery, but nothing I was interested in. Poot. I also missed out on the Canadian Aviation Museum but I didn't feel like changing my wet clothes and rushing out to find a taxi to take me out there. Next trip.
I'm going to fill my coffee cup, pick up my knitting and contemplate packing up my bags for my flight tomorrow.
