size 4.5 mm (US7) needles
Worsted weight cotton yarn (Bernat in "orange" for above cloth)
"Damn Yankees" Dishcloth
(based on a stitch pattern from Alice Starmore's Yankee Puzzle jacket.)
4.5 mm (US#7) needles
worsted weight cotton of your choice (I used Bernat Handicrafter in #55 Orange)
Cast on 39 stitches. Work four rows in garter stitch (knit every row). Begin pattern (this includes a five stitch garter border on either side). I used the square brackets to break up each part of the three stitch patterns:
Row 1: K5, [P1, K7, P1] [K1, P9, K1] [P1, K7, P1] K5
Row 2: K5, [K2, P5, K2] [P2, K7, P2] [K2, P5, K2] K5
Row 3: K5, [P3, K3, P3] [K3, P5, K3] [P3, K3, P3] K5
Row 4: K5, [K4, P1, K4] [P4, K3, P4] [K4, P1, K4] K5
Row 5: K5, [P9] [K5, P1, K5][P9] K5
Row 6: repeat Row 4
Row 7: repeat Row 3
Row 8: repeat Row 2
Row 9: repeat Row 1
Row 10: K5, purl across to last 5 stitches; K5
I did a total of five sets of the 10-row pattern, then did 4 rows garter stitch, and cast off. My cloth measures about 9.5 inches square.
