size 4.5 mm (US7) needles
Worsted weight cotton (Bernat "potpourri ombre" for above cloth)
Cast on 39 stitches
Knit 4 rows for garter stitch border
Row 1: K5 (P1 K3)* repeat to last two stitches, K2
Row 2: K3 (P1 K3)* repeat to end.
Repeat these two rows to desired length; end with knitting 4 rows. Cast off.
This made a 9 inch square cloth for me. You end up with a K3 garter stitch border on each end of the row. And the cloth is pretty well reversible, too!
