Circular Placemat Pattern

I didn't keep detailed notes while I made this, just scribbled some numbers down. If any of the rounds don't come out exactly even, just fudge it to make it work!

Also, I don't know the exact finished size; this was in the mail to my Mom before I thought to measure it. For sure about 11 inches in diameter before the shell edging was added.

4.25 mm crochet hook

Bernat Handicrafter Cotton yarn (or cotton yarn of your choice) (I needed one plus a little of the variegated skeins for each placemat. You should be able to get one out of a solid colour skein as the yardage is greater.)

Row 1: chain 2.

Row 2: 6 sc in 2nd chain from hook; join with slip stitch into first sc.

Row 3: ch 3 (counts as first dc in this and remaining rows); dc in same stitch; 2 dc in each remaining sc; join to top of ch 3.

Row 4: ch 3, dc in same st; 2 dc in each remaining dc; join to top of ch 3.

Row 5: ch 3, 2 dc in next dc; [dc in next dc; 2 dc in next dc] around. Join to top of ch 3.

Row 6: ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; [dc in next 2 dc; 2 dc in next dc] around. Join to top of ch 3.

Row 7: ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; [dc in next 3 dc; 2 dc in next dc] around. Join to top of ch 3.

Row 8: ch 3, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc; [dc in next 4 dc; 2 dc in next dc] around. Join to top of ch 3.

Row 9: ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc; [dc in next 5 dc; 2 dc in next dc] around. Join to top of ch 3.

Row 10: ch 3, dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc; [dc in next 6 dc; 2 dc in next dc] around. Join to top of ch 3.

Row 11: ch 3, dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc; [dc in next 7 dc; 2 dc in next dc] around. Join to top of ch 3.

(I stopped increasing at this round. You can make the placemat larger by continuing the increases in this manner.)

I did one round of single crochet in a contrasting colour before doing the shell edging.

Shell Edging:

Slip st. in next sc; ch 3;

Make dc in same as ch 3 stitch; ch 1, 2 dc (first shell made)

Skip next 3 sc; [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next sc (one shell);repeat all around edge of placemat. It seems to me I ended up having to fudge the last shell, I had 2 sc between it and the start of the round, so you might have to get creative. Join the last shell to the first by a slip stitch to the top of the initial ch 3 of the round.

Done!
