size 4.5 mm (US7) needles
Worsted weight cotton yarn (Bernat in "deep clay" for above cloth)
Cast on 42 stitches
Knit 4 rows
Start waffle pattern:
Row 1: K3 (K2P2)* repeat to last 3 stitches; K3
Row 2: same as Row 1
Row 3: K across
Row 4: K3, purl to last 3 stitches; K3
Repeat these four rows to desired length. End with 4 knit rows for garter stitch border.
I did the (four row) repeat 13 times and got a 10 x 10" cloth. On the last set of four, I worked rows 1, 2 and 3 as noted; row 4 I knit also, instead of purling. Then I knit two more rows to have a total of 4 knit rows for the garter stitch border.
I like the waffle pattern as it has bumps good for scrubbing; it's not a completely reversible pattern, but still looks nice.
